Common Questions about Artificial Turf

How will our pets react to the artificial grass?

Pets love Waterwise’s Artificial Turf. Waste material can be scooped up or hosed down to remove. With Waterwise’s 100% permeable backing system, water washes through the turf and down into the base material. In very warm climates, artificial turf can become hot in direct sunlight. In pet areas, shade structures are recommended for this purpose.

Does the grass have a directional pile?

Yes. It will need to be matched when you install it.

With a lot of use will the grass matt or flatten?

Under heavy traffic, any long pile turf/carpet will show signs of matting. Stepping stones or concrete in the high traffic area can reduce wear.

Can I use artificial grass beside a swimming pool?

Yes. This is an ideal application as it keeps grass clippings, and therefore chemicals, from expediting the deterioration of the pool equipment.

Why is sand infill used?

The function of sand in turf is weight. It helps prevent the turf from expanding and contracting with temperature changes. Sand is also chemically inert and fire resistant.

What can we use for edging?

Clean, permanent, professional borders are recommended to finish turf edge. Concrete curbing or Wood-Flex Polypropylene bender-board is great for this use. Making sure that your border will last as long as the turf.

What are the costs of artificial grass?

Although the up-front cost of installation can be more than natural grass, this excess is easily recovered over the life of the grass when you consider the long-term costs of irrigation and drainage systems, mowing, fertilizing, watering, aerating, or over-seeding. Cost may vary by region and can be determined by scheduling an appointment for a free estimate.

Can I install artificial grass on top of my existing lawn?

No. However, the artificial grass can be installed over your natural soil. An aggregate sub-base is recommended to keep the area level and compacted. This aggregate base is also valuable for drainage. Most natural soils will not compact or absorb as well as an aggregate base.

What holds down the artificial grass?

The weight of silica sand helps to hold the turf down. Sand or a similar substitute is recommended in all turf landscape turfs, especially in high traffic areas. The grass should also be spiked using landscape staples, or galvanized spikes.

How easy is it to cut and shape artificial grass?

It is not terribly difficult. We recommend practicing on some scrap before you take on your project. Using a carpet knife or carpet shaper can make things much more accurate, faster, and easier.

How quick can I get my artificial grass?

We keep the majority of our styles in stock. If you need something that is not in stock we can usually have it within a week. If you choose to have the project professionally installed, you may need to plan on about a 3 week lead time.

Is artificial grass safe for children?

Yes. Keep in mind that the warmer climates, the turf can get hot in direct sunlight. Always check turf before letting children contact turf with bare skin.

Will weeds grow on the artificial grass?

Strangely the answer is yes. The sand infill can provide a hydroponic environment for the seeds to root. However the backing we use for the artificial grass is strong enough to prevent the roots growing through to the soil. This means that any weeds can easily be brushed away with a leaf rake.

What are the applications when artificial grass can be used?

Lawns and landscaping are the most common uses. Sports playing surfaces are also very popular from tennis courts to putting greens to soccer fields. There are many other uses, for instance:

  1. Roof gardens
  2. Patios
  3. Swimming pool surrounds
  4. Children’s play areas
  5. Pet friendly areas, dog runs, kennels
